What are FREE Range Hen Eggs anyway?

>> Monday, May 24, 2010

Share

"The USDA allows labeling eggs as "free range eggs" if they are from a farm that allows the hen access to an outside area for at least five minutes each day. Nowhere is it stipulated that the hen actually has to go outside; it only has to have the access to do so for at least five minutes in each 24-hour period." (Full article)

We might add that this also does not specify what "outside" means. Is it merely a part of the cage open to the sky? Nor does it specify how large the "outside" area must be  or even if it must include access to the earth. In other words, the use of such phrases often are advertising ploys based on deception, and they are fully approved by the FDA.

I guess its not the big farm and blue skies Rio thought the chickens lived in.  Oh well, guess truth in labeling does not count here?

Research links pesticides with ADHD in kids

A new analysis of U.S. health data links children's attention-deficit disorder with exposure to common pesticides used on fruits and vegetables

In the body, pesticides break down into compounds that can be measured in urine. Almost universally, the study found detectable levels: The compounds turned up in the urine of 94 percent of the children.
The kids with higher levels had increased chances of having ADHD, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, a common problem that causes students to have trouble in school. The findings were published Monday in Pediatrics.
people can limit their exposure by eating organic produce. Frozen blueberries, strawberries and celery had more pesticide residue than other foods in one government report.
A 2008 Emory University study found that in children who switched to organically grown fruits and vegetables, urine levels of pesticide compounds dropped to undetectable or close to undetectable levels.
Because of known dangers of pesticides in humans, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency limits how much residue can stay on food. But the new study shows it's possible even tiny, allowable amounts of pesticide may affect brain chemistry, Rauh said.

Farmers should not need Aluminum Resistant Crop Seeds

Share

It seems Monsanto is now marketing Genetically Engineered crop seeds.  However independent researchers such as journalist Michael Murphy’s research into chemtrails, geo-engineering, and the fact that extremely high levels of aluminum and barium are found in water, snow and soil, in areas shown to have heavy chemtrail patterns

Coincidence that Monsanto will “come to the rescue” with aluminum resistance genes because normal plants die off in the presence of excess aluminum?

Study toAnalyze individual's genome for risk of dozens of diseases, potential responses to treatment

>> Sunday, May 16, 2010

Share

For the first time, researchers have used a healthy person's complete genome sequence to predict his risk for dozens of diseases and how he will respond to several common medications. The risk analysis, from the Stanford University School of Medicine, also incorporates more-traditional information such as a patient's age and gender and other clinical measurements. The resulting, easy-to-use, cumulative risk report will likely catapult the use of such data out of the lab and into the waiting room of average physicians within the next decade, say the scientists.

"When combined with other sources of information, genomics has the power to predict the diseases a person is most likely to develop and how he or she might respond to certain medicines," said Jeremy Berg, PhD, director of the NIH's National Institute of General Medical Sciences, which funded a portion of the work. "This work provides a glimpse of how genomics can play a role in personalizing the medical care of individual patients."

"We're at the dawn of a new age in genomics," said Stephen Quake, PhD, who is the Lee Otterson Professor of Bioengineering. "Information like this will enable doctors to deliver personalized health care like never before. Patients at risk for certain diseases will be able to receive closer monitoring and more frequent testing, while those who are at lower risk will be spared unnecessary tests. This will have important economic benefits as well, because it improves the efficiency of medicine."

"Patients, doctors and geneticists are about to hit by a tsunami of genome sequence data. The experience with Steve Quake's genome shows we need to start thinking — hard and soon — about how we can deal with that information," said Greely

Of course, a person's environment — in the form of choices he or she makes about diet, exercise and habits like smoking and drinking — can also powerfully affect disease risk. But if clinicians know that a patient has a higher-than-normal risk for a certain disease, they may recommend certain lifestyle changes more strongly.

Herbal Supplements, Warfarin Can Be Hazardous Mix

Share

Eight out of the 10 most popular supplements in the United States could spark safety concerns with respect to warfarin, while also impacting the drug's effectiveness.

"Warfarin is a very high-risk medication, which can be associated with severe consequences when it's not managed properly," she added. "However, warfarin is derived from a plant, sweet clover. In fact, many of our prescription drugs came from plants. So, it's very important for patients to recognize that just because an herb is marketed not like a prescription drug [that] doesn't mean it doesn't have similar effects in the body."

An increase in bleeding risk was specifically linked to the use of cranberry, garlic, ginkgo and saw palmetto supplements, the team said.

Glucosamine/chondroitin, essential fatty acids, multi-herb products, evening primrose oil, co-enzyme Q10, soy, melatonin, ginseng and St. John's wort all affected warfarin's effectiveness so much so that they prompted a need for adjustments in the drug's prescribed dosage.

A representative of the supplements industry took a slightly different view.
Duffy MacKay, vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs for the D.C.-based Council for Responsible Nutrition, the leading dietary supplement industry trade association, said that, "the issue here is really more with warfarin."
"It's just a very sensitive medication," he said. "Warfarin itself has a huge list of drugs, foods and over-the-counters that it interacts with. If you take too much or too little, it can become dangerous."

Heartburn Drugs Pose Risks: 12 Natural Symptom Relievers

>> Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Share

"About 60 to 70 percent of people taking these drugs have mild heartburn and shouldn't be on them," says Mitchell Katz, director of the San Francisco Department of Public Health

And we all know that these types of drugs are over 10 billion a year in Sales.

"but, beyond symptom relief, there's no long-term benefit to taking them, while there are some long-term risks." One study found a 74 percent increase in risk of infection with a harmful intestinal bacteria called Clostridium difficile for those taking a daily prescription-strength PPI, while another found a 25 percent increased risk of fractures in postmenopausal women who used PPI's.

1. Avoid heartburn-triggering foods. These vary from person to person, but common offenders include orange juice, chocolate, tomato sauce, spicy foods, mint, garlic, and vinegar. Fatty, greasy foods, like cheeseburgers and fries, are also heartburn instigators.
2. Stay upright for a few hours after you eat. Sitting up works with gravity to keep food and stomach acid from flowing up into your esophagus. Better yet, move about a bit to help speed digestion. "Our grandparents had it right when they headed out for a walk after a large meal," he says.
3. But abstain from exercise right after eating. Intense workouts slow digestion, making reflux more likely. Better to exercise first thing in the morning or a few hours after a meal. If you still experience heartburn symptoms after a workout, drink extra water. Staying hydrated helps improve digestion to keep symptoms at bay.
4. Eat smaller meals. To avoid heartburn, aim to eat up to six mini-meals a day, as opposed to three large ones. The worst? Eating a large meal right before bed. Try to abstain from food or drinks within an hour or two of bedtime. Even a tall glass of water before lying down can trigger symptoms in susceptible individuals.
5. Go easy on caffeine and alcohol-and avoid cigarettes. All three can relax the esophageal sphincter muscle, which normally keeps stomach acid from splashing up into the esophagus. Carbonated beverages can also cause this problem.
6. Don't eat too quickly. Try chewing slowly and putting your fork down between bites. Hot soups are a good appetizer because they take longer to consume.
7. Wear looser-fitting clothes. Tight belts, waistbands, and pantyhose constrict the stomach, sometimes triggering reflux.
8. Find ways to relax. Stress may increase stomach acids, raising the likelihood of heartburn.
9. Aim to lose a few extra pounds. The pressure of excess weight-especially around the abdomen-increases the chance that stomach acid will backwash into the esophagus.
10. Try chewing gum. This can boost the production of saliva, which neutralizes stomach acid.
11. Bend with your knees. Bending over at the waist tends to promote heartburn symptoms.
12. Elevate the head of your bed. Place blocks or bricks under your bedposts to raise the head of your bed 6 inches. Elevating your head and chest during sleep helps prevent nighttime reflux. A wedge pillow may also work.

In Addition, Rio Naturista offers products which may help your body deal with these issues.  Come into our store for more details

Here are some detailed show notes from the broadcast on May 3, 2010 with George Noory.

When the body is stressed, the following things happen:
1) White Blood Cells are not created, for up to 24 hours.
2) Constricts Body Veins
3) Cortisol Levels Jump (depression, weight gain could be some results of this hormone - Fight or Flight)

The Hormone Oxytocin can calm women that are under much stress.

Food such as white potatoes, enriched bread, rice, rice cakes can have a glycemic effect higher then normal, spiking the short term sugar level of blood, which then turns ACIDIC.  This acid is not absorbable by the body.  Best are whole grains and soluble fibers.  Here is a chart of common foods, high numbers being worse for sugar levels

High blood sugar levels create a loss of vital brain minerals.  MSG can have this same effect so mono sodium glutamate is not good to eat.

So stress and certain types of sugar intake are harmful for the body.

Konjac root is very high in Fiber as is PGX.  Konjac is made in noodle form for easier consumption.  Again good quality is best for consumption.

Regeneration remedies were spoken of next:  Whey Protein raw pure buttermilk (non pasteurized), mixed with Medium Chain Triglycerides Coconut Oil (pure) seems to drop cortisol levels in the body.  It is also suggested to take a tablespoon of pure brown molasses (contains alot of minerals)

A secret mineral was also mentioned, Lithium orotate (Hans Neper) in a dosage of just 4.5mg seems to be effective in ADD/bipolar mental issues according to the author.  Gabba, Dopamine, and Melatonine also play a factor.

Acai is not considered a superfood, but a diarectic (helps metabolism)
Superfoods:
Himalyan Gogi Berry (Thai Go is our favorite at Rio from NSP)
Rhodiola Rosea (Artic Root) mental clarity and stress reduction
Maca Root (Enzyme properties found in this root match those in humans)

Adrenal exhaustion is plaguing most people in modern society.

Testosterone does not make a male MEANER, elevated levels create faster reaction times.  Its actually estrogen that can create the mood swing issues.  The estrogen of eating mean seems to have some issues in contributing to prostate cancer in men.  Saliva tests are more accurate then serum (blood) tests.

Homeopathic HCG (Special Diet, protein only) was mentioned but seems to have different reports if its not REAL HCG.

Good sources of protein included Flax, Casine (rice) Rhodiola etc.  Do not use soy

Raw food diets seem to take more energy to process, but do contain enzymes to help the digestion process.  Tongkat Ali (thailand) seems to increase the free testosterone in the body (400mg or better some say)

Omega-3 of course.  Hemp, Chia Seed, Fish oils,
Omega-9 Olive Oil, anti inflamatory.

VectoMega, 50x more effecient.
http://www.vectomega.com/  (Alot of good feedback from this product apparently)

Aloe Vera Juice (with some lemon)
Liver Bile (detoxifies) - Lemon

There is a new diabetes 3 (brain cannot consume sugar) affecting elders.
Drinking beer makes Melatonine, opposite of dopamine.

Its important to walk alot and hydrate during walking.

Does Iron Man 2 Drink up Chlorophyll sold by Rio Naturista?

Share

In some scenes of Iron Man 2, Robert Downey Jr. is seen drinking up on Chlorophyll to counter the effects of a substance killing him.  Detoxing with such a product is possible, but perhaps not to the extent portrayed in the movie.  Our choice of product is one we recommend to all our customers.

Natures Sunshine version of this Iron Man favorite contains the following:

Benefits:•Helps promote the natural blood-cleansing functions of the body.
•Promotes strong immune response.
•Strengthens cells.
•Deodorizes the body, including the bowel.

Chlorophyll [Intestinal] is the green pigment in plants that harnesses the sun’s energy in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll performs metabolic functions in plants such as respiration and growth. Interestingly, the chlorophyll molecule is chemically similar to human blood, except that its central atom is magnesium, whereas that of human blood is iron. Liquid Chlorophyll may help improve immune response and deodorize the body. The alfalfa plant, from which Nature’s Sunshine’s chlorophyll comes, is an excellent source of chlorophyll. Nature’s Sunshine offers chlorophyll in both liquid and capsules for varying needs.

For liquid, take 1 teaspoon in water twice daily. For capsules, take 1–2 capsules daily with a meal.

Scientists keenly studying the DNA of a 17-year-old girl who has body / behaviour of a baby

Share

Scientists are hoping to gain new insights into the mysteries of ageing by sequencing the genome of a 17-year-old girl who has the body and behaviour of a tiny toddler.

Brooke Greenberg is old enough to drive a car and next year will be old enough to vote — but at 16lb in weight and just 30in tall, she is still the size of a one-year-old.
If confirmed, the research could give scientists a fresh understanding of ageing and even suggest new therapies for diseases linked to old age.
“We think that she has a mutation in the genes that control her ageing and development so that she appears to have been frozen in time.
“If we can compare her genome to the normal version then we might be able to find those genes and see exactly what they do and how to control them.”
Such research will be the focus of a conference at the Royal Society in London this week to be attended by some of the world’s leading age researchers.
It follows a series of scientific breakthroughs showing that the life span of many animals can be dramatically extended by making minute changes in single genes.
The work began with tiny worms known as C elegans, which normally live for only about a fortnight. Researchers have been able to extend their life span by up to 10 weeks by making small changes in certain genes.
The laboratory findings have been supported by research into humans, focusing on families whose members are long-lived. In one recent study Eline Slagboom, professor of molecular epidemiology at Leiden University, Holland, collected data on 30,500 people in 500 long-lived families to find the metabolic and genetic factors that make them special.
“Such people simply age slower than the rest of us,” she said. “Their skin is better, they have less risk of diseases of old age like diabetes, heart disease and hypertension and their ability to metabolise lipids and other nutrients is better. The question is: what is controlling all these different manifestations of slow ageing?
“So far, the evidence suggests that there could be just a few key genes in charge of it all. If we can find out where they are and how they work, it opens the way to new therapies against the diseases of ageing that could work in all of us.”
Walker and other researchers, including Kenyon, believe that finding the cause of Brooke Greenberg’s condition could be one way to pinpoint some of those genes.

Congressman Waxman Slips Obscure Anti-Supplement Measure into Wall St. “Reform” Bill Passed by the House

>> Monday, May 3, 2010

Share

RIO NATURISTA BREAKING NEWS!

The American public is becoming fed up with “sneak” provisions tacked onto largely unrelated bills that are likely to pass. A glaring recent example was tacking onto the Healthcare bill a complete change to student loans. Often the “sneak” provision is so buried that hardly anyone is aware of it.

The Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009 (H.R. 4173), recently passed in the House of Representatives, includes language going far beyond finance inserted by Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA). This language could be used for an end run around the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), the legislation that governs dietary supplement regulation by the FDA.

Congressman Waxman is well known as an opponent of the dietary supplement industry. This is somewhat ironic: his district includes Hollywood and presumably many of his closest supporters are health store shoppers and supplement users. Most of these people simply don’t know what Waxman is doing in this area.

This powerful Congressman, chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee (which includes health as a subcommittee), would appear to want supplements regulated like drugs, a step that would effectively eliminate them. He is determined and has stated: “One enduring truth about Washington is that no issue is ever settled for good.”

ANH-USA has been on alert to see how Waxman would use his committee chairmanship to strike at DSHEA. He is very clever and we knew a covert attack was a possibility.
A direct attack on supplements would take the form of an amendment to DSHEA, since that legislation governs FDA regulation of supplements. In this case, Waxman has left DSHEA alone, and has instead inserted language in the Wall St. “reform” bill that gives the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) important new powers that could be used to circumvent key supplement protections in DSHEA. TAKE ACTION

To see how this would work, let’s see how the FTC operates today. Its chief mission is to combat commercial fraud. It has full authority to pursue companies making fraudulent claims. But the FTC can’t go beyond that, can’t set other regulatory requirements, without advance approval of Congress. The FTC once had this regulatory “rule-making” authority. It lost it in the 1980’s because Congress thought the Agency was abusing it.

At the present time, if the FTC moves against a dietary supplement company for false or misleading advertising, the FTC typically requires the company, as part of a consent decree agreed to by both parties, to back up its claims by undertaking at least two random controlled human trials. This is done on a case-by-case basis and is legal because the targeted company has agreed to it.

If the FTC had general rulemaking authority, which Waxman’s language reinstates, the Agency would be expected to create a new legal requirement for all supplement companies. Such companies would have to perform at least two of these human studies before making any claims for their products.

Why should we care whether supplement companies are required to perform two random controlled human trials for each product? Because such trials take a long time and would be beyond the financial means of most supplement companies. Even if the companies could find the money, the FTC could require more and more costly versions of these studies, or more of these studies. At each stage, fewer supplements would be available, and those available would cost more and more, until they became as costly as drugs.TAKE ACTION

Supplements are not drugs. In most cases, drugs are non-natural and therefore patentable substances. Why patentable? Because no company will spend a billion dollars on studies and FDA approval trials without the monopoly provided by the patent. To insist that supplements be treated like drugs is really to sound the death knell for the supplement industry, something that drug companies would be delighted to see, because they know that supplements are their chief potential competition, are often more effective than drugs, are often less toxic, and are always much less expensive.

Supplements are already regulated by the FDA under DSHEA. If the Waxman provision is included in the final Wall St “reform” bill, the FTC will gain the power to override the limited protections for supplements that already exist under DSHEA. The FDA would still have to respect DSHEA, but the FTC would not be so constrained.
Five unelected FTC commissioners would issue binding regulations in a wide range of areas, including the regulation of dietary supplements. And companies that did not comply with the new FTC rules could effectively be put out of business.

According to renowned constitutional attorney Jonathan Emord, “The provision removing the ban on FTC rulemaking without Congressional preapproval contained in H.R. 4173 invites the very same irresponsible over-regulation of the commercial marketplace that led Congress to enact the ban in the 1980s. FTC has no shortage of power to regulate deceptive advertising; this bill gives it far more discretionary power than it needs, inviting greater abuse and mischief from an agency that suffers virtually no check on its discretion.”
